In a nutshell: NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) has published draft public health guidance on PSHE.  The guidance highlights that: “Good quality sex, relationships and alcohol education can help young people to understand the risks and consequences of their actions, the meaning of ‘consent’, and their rights and responsibilities.”

In a nutshell: The Department for Children, Schools and Families “Why Let Drink Decide?” Campaign has been launched ahead of the Government’s Families and Relationships Green Paper which is published later this month. Ed Balls, the Children’s Secretary has joined forces with comedian Bill Bailey to launch a new national advertising campaign to raise awareness of how alcohol can make young people vulnerable to problems including unwanted pregnancy, road traffic accidents and poor performances at school.

Alcohol Concern calls for greater vigilance of website alcohol adverts

In a nutshell: In order to protect children from alcohol advertisements the charity Alcohol Concern is calling on drinks retailers to avoid “retargeting” advertising techniques.  “Retargeted advertising” is advertising which appears to online users from companies whose websites they have previously visited.

In a nutshell: A new campaign, launched with the help of comedians such as Bill Bailey, is aimed at encouraging parents to talk about alcohol with their children.  The campaign, which includes a TV advert and online clips,  provides parents with information, links and tips on how to approach the subject.

Drinkaware’s response to Chief Medical Officer’s guidance on children and alcohol

In a nutshell: Following advice from the Chief Medical Officer on the consumption of alcohol by children and young people Drinkaware has provided tips for parents including:

  • Be a positive role model – adults should drink with the recommended daily guidelines (3-4 units for men, 2-3 for women)
  • Introduce the topic early – the average age for young people to have their first alcoholic drink is 13
  • Don’t make alcohol a taboo subject – ensure your child can talk freely to you about alcohol.
  • If your child does get drunk try not to overreact – talk to them about it the next morning: listen to what they have to say and try to understand their situation.
