Fifty alcohol related companies have committed more than £5 million per year for the next three years to support Drinkaware and its work. In a nutshell: Following advice from the Chief Medical Officer on the consumption of alcohol by children and young people Drinkaware has provided tips for parents including:
- Be a positive role model – adults should drink with the recommended daily guidelines (3-4 units for men, 2-3 for women)
- Introduce the topic early – the average age for young people to have their first alcoholic drink is 13
- Don’t make alcohol a taboo subject – ensure your child can talk freely to you about alcohol.
- If your child does get drunk try not to overreact – talk to them about it the next morning: listen to what they have to say and try to understand their situation.

Many “drink more than they think”

In a nutshell: Drinkers in the UK consume the equivalent of a bottle of wine per week more than they admit to. Analysis of a report from the Centre for Public Health has been published by Alcohol Concern showing that there is a large underestimation in how much people actually drink. Survey data and sales data reveal that 225 million litres of alcohol or 430 million units of alcohol per week go unaccounted for.

In a nutshell: People in Britain are hoping to lose over 23 million stone in weight in as part of their New Year’s resolutions. Research into pledges for 2010 by the charity Drinkaware and their online “Drink Less Be More” campaign found that 6.7 million people have set a pledge to drink less in 2010. Users who take part in the campaign are also shown the impact of their drinking on their health and fitness, including how their drinking equates to calories and food, as well as how much exercise would be needed to burn off the calories contained in drinks.
